Hunting down that Snark: Figuring out the Forces at Play in Surface Sound Realizations
This presentation will chart the methodological steps that typify
the investigation of sound patterns in natural language,
beginning with a classic textbook puzzle, and then considering
successively larger bodies of data and the possible accounts
that may accommodate them. Along the way, various long-
standing hypotheses are discredited and discarded, the
demand throughout that the investigator seek always to falsify
their replacements with any and all new data that might emerge-
----for that Snark may well be 'a Boojum', after all.
