Serving Science - The CUNY Science Cafe

Each month, Serving Science, the CUNY Science Cafe brings key CUNY faculty to Kouzan Japanese Restaurant to discuss newsworthy scientific topics. This month at Serving Science, Dr. John Waldman presents "Life in New York Harbor: Death and Resurrection." The Henry Hudson Quadricentennial of 2009 is a fitting point in time to re-examine the status of Hudson River Estuary. The environment of its terminus-New York Harbor-has traced one of the most profound and fastest arcs in history, from pristine beginnings, to a ravaged state, and back to a semblance of ecological health in only four centuries. Dr. Waldman, author of Heartbeats in the Muck: the History, Sea Life, and Environment of New York Harbor will discuss the original waterscape, what forces devastated its ecosystem, and how the environmental movement helped launch its resurrection-not to its original condition but to an surprisingly high degree of ecological functionality.
