Serving Science - The CUNY Science Cafe
Each month, Serving Science brings key CUNY faculty to Kouzan Restaurant to discuss newsworthy scientific topics. In December, Dr. Lawrence Kobilinsky will present "Genes in the Courtroom: Science and Justice for All." He will discuss the evolution of Forensic Science over the past 3 decades, including crime scene investigation, emphasizing the importance of physical and biological evidence in associating a suspect with a victim or the crime scene. Evidence is first identified, then individualized to determine its origin. Biological evidence is examined first by serologists and then by DNA analysts. DNA obtained from blood, semen, or other tissue evidence is first quantified, then screened using 13 genetic markers. Dr. Kobilinsky will address the importance of the national CODIS database, in capturing serial offenders who often commit crimes across state lines or in different jurisdictions. The recent National Academy of Sciences report on improving non-DNA forensic science will also be discussed.
