Analyzing Search Engine Manipulation Campaigns

Nicolas Christin Carnegie Mellon University Associate Director and Faculty, Information Networking Institute Senior Systems Scientist, CyLab Understanding online crime from an economic and operational standpoint has become a key to trying to turn the tide. The speaker will describe two measurement studies that provide evidence that fraudsters increasingly are focusing their efforts on search-engine manipulation. One focuses on the compromise of high page rank web sites to redirect users to web sites for the unauthorized sale of prescription drugs. The second study examines the use of “trending” search terms to lead users to malware-distributing or ad filled web sites. The talk also presents an economic model of this activity and discusses how web site intervention can impact the profits fraudsters achieve.RSVP: Nicole Daniels at 212-237-8920 or email ndaniels@jjay.cuny.edu.
