Shangaa: Art of Tanzania

This groundbreaking exhibition is the first (outside of Germany and its own country) to survey this vast, overlooked region of African art. In many ways, this exhibition experience is designed to do what Tanzanians call Shangaa: to amaze, surprise, and even to - dumbfound or confound - several misconceptions about how the public views Tanzanian art and culture. This exceptional and historic exhibition will feature 150 objects that highlight the diversity of Tanzanian art and culture. The objects range from the 19th-century to objects made by celebrated artists for indigenous use today; underscoring that Tanzanian art and culture are vibrant, living traditions.
