A Tribute to Shirley Clarke and Ornette Coleman
A TRIBUTE TO DIRECTOR SHIRLEY CLARKE
The New York Times has called Shirley Clarke "one of the great untold stories of American independent cinema". This is a rare opportunity to see her newly restored, quintessential film, "Ornette: Made in America" (1985), introduced with a talk by film historian/critic J. Hoberman.
"Ornette: Made in America" is, according to the Christian Science Monitor, "a fascinating, maddening, one-of-a-kind film."
We're also showing her earlier, outrageous, groundbreaking "Portrait of Jason" (1967) at
4 pm in Shepard Hall 95. Not for nothing did Ingmar Bergman considered it "the most fascinating film I've ever seen."
This one-day tribute to Shirley Clarke is sponsored by the Documentary Forum of CCNY, the Rifkind Center for the Humanities, the Music Dept., the MCA Dept. Cinema Studies Program, the Women's Studies Program and the Black Studies Program at City College. Admission is free.
